A Little History

The story of Living Hope Church has been one of great excitement and adventure, while still focused on one thing. Since the doors first opened 1996 with only five families, The vision God gave to Pastor John included one goal: to fulfill the Great Commission of Jesus. Our mission is to exists to passionately, authentically and simply help people know Jesus and become His disciples.

What began with just a handful of people has become a rapidly growing community where people from all walks of life are accepted as they are, and feel free to worship God in a unique atmosphere. Our vision – then and now – is to be a church for people who don’t do church. We are a body of people who will risk everything to reach the next one person with the simple, life-changing and eternity-altering message of Jesus Christ.

In November of 2003 we joined with Prairie Community Church and two church families became one. We merged again in October of 2005, and Vancouver Community Church became our first satellite campus. As Living Hope continued to grow we eventually found ourselves in an old Mervyns store at Vancouver Mall. Then in January 2011, God led us to a former Kmart building, which is now our home.

From that humble beginning we have grown to over thousands in weekly attendance. More than that, we have been privileged to see – over and over – that moment when a life changes through the extravagant love and grace of Jesus. These moments are the reason we do what we do!

Our Faith

The Bible
We believe that the Bible is God’s written Word. The Holy Scriptures are both infallible and inerrant in their original writings. The scriptures were verbally inspired, both Old and New Testaments. By this we understand that the Holy Spirit inspired the thoughts of the writer. The Bible is the final authority in all matters of faith and practice for the believer. Living Hope is committed to God’s Word as the standard and final authority in all that we say and do as a body of believers.

2 TIMOTHY 3:16-17
2 PETER 1:20-21

Man's Creation and Fall
We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God. Our first historical parents, Adam and Eve, sinned by rebelling against God’s revealed will, and thus became alienated from God (separated both physically and spiritually), acquired a sin nature, and came under the judicial sentence of death. All human beings are consequently born with a sinful nature that leads them to sin in thought, word, and deed.
The Holy Spirit
We believe that the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Godhead, in the present age indwells and gives life to all believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, baptizes them into the Body of Christ, and gives them gifts to serve in the body of Christ. The Holy Spirit enables disciples of Jesus to understand the Scriptures, empowers them for godly living, and equips them for service and to be witnesses for Him.

1 CORINTHIANS 12:12-14

EPHESIANS 1:13-14, 5:18-20

The Church

We believe that one, holy universal Church is the body of Christ. The Church is the spiritual organism made up of all born again persons in this age. The Church is God’s plan for reaching lost people and building His Kingdom.

MATTHEW 16:18-19; ACTS 1:8; EPHESIANS 1:22-23, 5:25-27; 1 CORINTHIANS 12:12-14

The Godhead

We believe in a Triune Sovereign God. We believe He exists eternally in three persons: Everlasting Father, His only begotten Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, the giver of all life. All three are eternal in being, identical in nature, equal in power and glory, and having precisely the same attributes and perfections.

The Person and work of Jesus Christ

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, became man, without ceasing to be God, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful mankind. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through His death on the cross, as a substitutionary sacrifice, and that our redemption is made sure to us by His resurrection from the dead.

JOHN 1:1-2; LUKE 1:35; ROMANS 3:24-25; 1 PETER 1:3-5

We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ is now in heaven exalted at the right hand of “God where, as High Priest of His people, He fulfills the ministry of Representative, Intercessor, and Advocate.” HEBREWS 9:24, 7:25; ROMANS 8:34; JOHN 2:1-2

We believe in the blessed hope that Jesus Christ will soon return to this earth, personally, visibly, and unexpectedly, in the power and great glory to gather His elect, to raise the dead, to judge the nations, and to bring His Kingdom to fulfillment.

We are very committed to living wholeheartedly for Jesus Christ. To live is Christ, to die is gain.

As His disciples, we continually strive to keep the greatest of all commandments that is to love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind and to also love others as we love ourselves.

We believe that salvation is the free gift of God offered to man by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that this faith is manifested in works pleasing to God.

EPHESIANS 2:8-10; TITUS 2:11-14

We believe that all true believers, once saved, shall be kept forever.

ROMANS 8:1, 38, 39; JOHN 10:27-30; 1 CORINTHIANS 1:4-8; PHILIPPIANS 1:6; 2 TIMOTHY 1:12

We believe at Living Hope that we are saved by God’s grace and love. We also believe that genuine faith is manifested by fruit in each believer’s life.

The Final State

We believe that the condition and retribution of the lost and the salvation and blessedness of the saved are conscious and everlasting.

MARK 9:43-48; REVELATION 20:15, 22; 22:3-5, 11

At Living Hope, we strongly believe in doing something about the faith in which we have placed our lives. We not only believe that this body of doctrine is a sacred trust to be always preserved and taught in its purity, but we also believe it teaches a life to be lived and a Gospel to be preached.
